Drones are all the rage at the moment. But it can be difficult to choose the best drone for aerial photography, simply because there are literally hundreds of possible drones you could purchase. I think it is important to invest around $700-$1000 in a high quality drone, especially when it is being used for photography. A drone not equipped for this purpose will be a lot cheaper and won’t complete the assigned task as well as a drone that is specifically designed for this purpose.
So what is the best drone for aerial photography?
One of the drones I would recommend is the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced Quadcopter Drone. It comes with an impressive 2.7K HD video camera which will take some fantastic shots from above. It comes with a fully stable 3 axis gimbal which aids this. An important feature of this drone is the ability for the drone to live stream 720p high quality videos which are stored instantaneously on the internal memory card of the drone. When I tried this feature, it completed it exactly as advertised!
This drone can also be used indoors, and so is multi-use. It can be good fun to practice your skills in the comfort of your own home. I feel it is important to ensure you have mastered the drone before flying it outside where more damage could occur.
The battery life of the drone is good, and is ready to fly as soon as you get it as the device comes pre-charged. In order to view live streaming of the drone, you can use DJI Pilot app. This app does work very well with the DJI Phantom 3.
The Phantom 3 really does offer a fantastic combination of value for money, usability, advanced features, and reliable operation that no other drone can rival. The drone can fly for around 18 minutes of flight time, which is quite good compared to other drones who sometimes can’t surpass 15 minutes. The only real drawback is that in order to use the streaming capability, you will need an up-to-date smart phone.
Another model which could be considered is the Yuneec Q500 Typhoon 4K drone. You don’t need an up to date smart phone as such to make the most of this device. It has an Android remote used as a touchscreen for keeping an eye on the drone.
The Yuneec can handle 4k videos, which is better quality than the DJI, but I found it a little more difficult to handle. The Yuneec also doesn’t have much of a range compared to the impressive DJI, but it will be enough for most drone users. The camera included with the drone can be removed and replaced if required, so if you need to repair or clean the camera, this can be easily done without dismantling the whole drone. It’s quite big and could be seen as cumbersome, but it looks fantastic.
Both of these drones reviewed above can be considered as the best drone for aerial photography. Make sure you read the customer reviews for each drone before you purchase to ensure you are choosing the best drone for your needs.
